Terrapin Watermelon Gose

What the brewers say

“Tart and refreshing, our Gose is sure to blow any picnic out of the water...melon.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Under-ripe watermelon up front gives way to a hint of funk that comes across a bit musty, but not unpleasant. Tartness comes through as lime juice, perhaps pineapple. Earthy undertone with a phenolic edge, with a vegetal note and musty/sweaty aromas.”

Flavor: “Underripe or watermelon rind with some lemon and lime mixed in, almost like a watermelon margarita. That tartness is accentuated by a hint of salt that’s funky and refreshing. Some of the fruit sweetness creeps back into the finish, and the aftertaste is all melon and salt.”

Overall: “A challenging spiced sour beer—the extra spice is just on the far side of identifiable. It tastes like trying to get the last hint of watermelon from the rind, eaten with salty fingers. Not terribly complex, but enough fruit to be interesting and refreshing on a warm summer day.”

COVA Brewing Company Watermelon Crawl

“A light ruby-colored beer with moderate clarity and little-to-no head. An herbal aroma, reminiscent of cucumbers, parsley, and lime zest. The flavor is definitely fresh watermelon, with rose water and a peppery-like, fruity spice flavor in the swallow. Quite tart, but not sour, with no real malt character. Lime hangs around through the aftertaste, where it tends to dominate alongside the faint lactic sourness. Pleasant mouthfeel, not thin, with a fruity sugar character without being sweet. No alcohol presence.”

COVA Brewing Company Aloha State of Mind

“Wonderful, warm sunset-orange color. A refreshing beer that finds a subtle balance with the hibiscus leading the passion fruit. The passion-fruit aroma is bright and enticing, translating onto the palate with delicate acidity and bold tropical-fruit flavor.”

Destihl Here Gose Nothing

**Aroma:** “Big on coriander, with some mild pepper spice and citrus aromas of orange and tangerine. Tart with a bit of funk and moderate acidity on the nose. A hint of salt, sweet pale malt aroma, and some earthiness.” **Flavor:** “Complex, unique tartness up front, with hints of lemon juice, which works surprisingly well with the moderate level of salt. Nice, soft malt background that balances the tartness, and no hops bitterness. Huge coriander, with a SweeTarts mix of malt and sour, and a big salty kiss that lingers into the aftertaste. Every sip hits pretty strong, but some of the other notes have to build to be noticed, like the phenolic spiciness and ester complexity.” **Overall:** “Fairly balanced and well-done, although a bit heavy-handed with the salt. Lots of balanced complexity, with tartness that’s supported by a tasty base beer.”
