Wise Man Brewing Living a Double Life

What the brewers say

“Rich and dark, this silky-smooth lager seduces you with sweet malty flavors. But drink carefully, because it packs quite a punch.”

What our panel thought

“Aroma is fairly light with notes of dark fruit and light toasty malt. Deeply mahogany with good clarity and a small but persistent head. Flavor is smooth and rich, with deep maltiness and strong dark fruit and cherry notes. Bitterness is low and balanced, keeping the finish from being overly sweet. Hops are minimal throughout. Very pleasant to drink.”

What our editors thought

“Crisp toasty edge on the nose evokes everything from dried oak leaves to stewed plums—rich with both sweet and more structuring elements that build a broadly intriguing aroma. It’s more indulgent in the flavor, as the sweeter dark-fruit notes initially push forward and claim space, only to be dried out in the finish by the light woody and herbal notes. Ranging yet focused, sweet yet spry, it’s a thoughtful study in contrasts.”

Dock Street Brewery Illuminator

“Unassuming nose, but a fantastic malt profile—layers of toasted coconut, dried fruit leather, and toast, yet not particularly sweet or heavy. Bread crust and cooked sugar. Clean, balanced bitterness on the finish with some sneaky smooth alcoholic heat. Full-bodied, but transitions to a lingering, lightly bitter finish.”

Incendiary Brewing Company Schwarzbier

“Fantastic example of the style. Really nice roasted malt character. Rich, complex dark malt with no roast-bitterness or harshness. Well-balanced mouthfeel with a snappy, balanced finish. Clean without being stark, leaving lingering notes of chocolate and dark caramel. Great simplicity while still having depth. Creamy, subtle, with an understated complexity. Drinks like a lager.”

Wise Man Brewing Living For The Moment

“Mild, smooth milk-chocolate aroma. Toasted dark-crust bread on the initial sip. Smooth, malty mouthfeel suggests white bread drizzled with caramel and candy sugar. A punch of sweetness adds complexity but limits the drinkability. Light and unpretentious. Finishes clean and well-rounded.”
