Alvarado Street Brewery Motor Oil 10

What the brewers say

"A blend of barrel aged and non-barrel aged imperial stout conditioned on vanilla beans and cacao nibs."

What our panel thought

“Smooth vanilla and cacao aroma evokes chocolate-covered marshmallow; notes of oak, roast, and alcohol—intriguing. In the flavor, dark-roast, bitter coffee, and tannins help cut through sweetness; waves of chocolate, vanilla, whiskey, oak.”

What our editors thought

“Nutty, toasted coconut on the nose with big vanilla. The sip dives into marshmallow world—huge vanilla braced by rich dark chocolate. It’s a wide gulf between highs and lows, as sweet punchy highs echo over rumbling lows.”

Alvarado Street Brewery Motor Oil No. 5

Immediate chocolate and orange on the nose. Aroma is well balanced. Thinner mouthfeel with balanced fla-vors of orange, chocolate, dark fruits, and vanilla. Alcohol is well-hidden. Flavors linger together nicely.

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Beyond Opulence

“Marshmallow nose with deep vanilla and dark chocolate in the background. On the tongue, a hunk of chocolate flavors followed by sweet, creamy vanilla. Dark chocolate and light earthy tobacco play nicely.”

Karrikin Spirits Keylime

Alcohol aroma is tequila-ish and rough—surprising, considering its low strength. Lime is there, but not particularly bright. Fairly sweet up front with some lime acidity in the finish. A bit of alcohol burn. Like a carbonated margarita with cheap tequila and sour mix.
