What the brewers say

Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels for 14 months.

What our panel thought

Bourbon nose with chocolate-covered cherries. A blend of chocolates with an underlying bourbon layer coats the palate. Soft and velvety with pillows of bourbon-filled chocolate and cherry truffles. A touch on the sweet side, but enough malt to back it up.

What our editors thought

Bourbon notes on the nose highlight an imprecise and mildly vegetal nose that transitions to dark fruit–infused chocolate in the sip. The net effect is more estery than exact.

Amalgam Brewing Another Realm

Subdued but complex nose: whiskey, chocolate-covered roast nuts, dark candied fruit, toffee. Huge and viscous on the palate—rich chocolate, caramel, stewed apples, cherry stem. Incredibly complex.

Lift Bridge Brewery Silhouette with Vanilla

“Moderate oak and vanilla notes lead the charge and control the aroma. The flavor brings in dark malt character featuring Hershey’s chocolate syrup and roast. Rich and thick with a lingering sweetness and hints of oak. The vanilla rounds out all the rough edges without being out of balance.”

Amalgam Underground Breakfast

This is at least 500 yards of velvet goodness. Coffee, maple, and vanilla blend very nicely in the aroma. Taste is the same, very smooth, velvety, and big. This one is hard to put down. As it warms, it gets even better. The barrel aspect comes out in the finish—some char to help balance the sweetness. Mouthfeel has a very silky texture. This is a beer we would gladly enjoy in a coffee mug while camping or hanging out by a fire late at night. Not overtly sweet, this can be a full glass of fun.
