What the brewers say

“Signal de Botrange is a farmhouse ale aged in chardonnay wine barrels and is part of the brewery’s Double Black series. Named for the highest tower on the highest point in Belgium, Signal de Botrange is brewed in tribute to the traditional farmhouse beers of the Wallonia region.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong hints of white grape, with a slight tannin and dry oak, but very subtle. Apple-caramel pie and fresh apple juice complement clove and banana. Some alcohol on the nose and a nice funk, but delicate.”

Flavor: “A dry wine-like finish, with white grape, peach, lemon, and slight orange fruit notes present. Delicate taste, with some alcohol, but the carbonation helps to dry the beer. The malt sweetness counters the fruit, and the very slight funk provides further balance.”

Overall: “If you like wine and are getting into beer, this would be a great place to start. Not too sweet, but balanced and a grape flavor. Tastes like apple pie and white wine all the way through.”
