Blackberry Farm Brewery Spring Saison

What the brewers say

“Large portions of floor-malted wheat give our refreshing Spring Saison its creamy mouthfeel and hazy straw color. Smooth, slightly tart, and delicately hopped, this beer is also spiced with orange peel, coriander, and grains of paradise.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Mild herbal and fruity aroma, with bits of grass and tangerine. Some spicy, earthy hops notes complemented by lemon, roses, and pears. Medium hops aroma with grapefruit and orange, with slight pepper that starts to shine as it warms.”

Flavor: “Complex flavors with big notes of coriander and pepper, and the spiciness plays well with the orange, tangerine, and lemongrass characteristics. Moderately sweet with a bit of hops bitterness at the finish. Gentle malt in the back, with some mild astringency.”

Overall: “Provides some interesting complexity between spice, fruitiness, and citrus. The earthy spice is really pleasant, and is a good take on a traditional French saison. Carbonation is pretty low, which comes off a bit heavy, giving it a harsher finish.”

The Referend Bier Blendery Mont Sainte-Victoire Houblon

Fruity nose with citrus, apple, persimmon, blueberries, tangerine, plus minty-grassy hops and earthy leather. In the flavor, tart citric bite joins minty hops, backed by grapefruit peel. Slightly astringent. Disjointed—a chasm between nose and tongue.

Blackberry Farm Brewery Classic Saison

**Aroma:** “Moderate white pepper note with a light fruit and lemon ester. Light spicy notes of lemongrass and white pepper. Low herbal earth hops. A very clean-smelling beer.” **Flavor:** “Big lemon and light grape notes up front with plenty of carbonation. Moderate grapefruit with a pithiness creates a dryness at the end of the sip. Tangerine carries through with light peppery phenols and white bread. Low malt sweetness up front gives way to a mix of moderate acidity and bitterness. Earthy hops presence with a slight floral and basil flavor. Clean and well-balanced. Hops bitterness lingers with a slight tartness in the back.” **Overall:** “Moderate carbonation covers up a lot of the fruitiness up front, but once it dissipates there is more sweetness and a moderate spicy note. The light mix of esters, phenols, and bready malt give a nice complexity, while the dry tart finish and high carbonation make it very refreshing.”
