Upslope Tropical Fruit Sour

What the brewers say

“Inspired by the classic Hawaiian POG juice, this golden sour is blended with more than 500 pounds of passion fruit, blood orange, and guava. Four sour projects, ranging from 6-months- to 2-years-old, make up the base for this tropical-fruit sour. Expressive notes of each fruit and a touch of sweetness balance the full acidity of this aged and fruit-forward sour.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Massive tropical fruit character: intense passion fruit backed by citrus, with hints of Makrut lime, orange, guava, and passion fruit. It’s like Hawaii in a glass.”

Flavor: “The fruit comes together really well. The sourness is a great mix of fruit tartness with underlying fermentation character; the passion fruit adds brightness; and the guava adds some body and a hint of floral character. The finish is relatively light. Very pleasant tart character without rough edges. Beer qualities are an afterthought, just enough to keep it from being thin.”

Overall: “A more modern take on this style that showcases the fruit expertly and singularly.”

Upslope Citra Pale Ale

Aroma: “Clean, subtle hop aroma with mainly floral notes and a touch of lemon. Malt plays a strictly supporting role. Retronasal presents a blueberry character.” Flavor: “Clean malt bill with lingering fruity bitterness. Same floral and lemon and blueberry as in the aroma. Bitterness grows in the aftertaste and lingers around. The fruitiness subsides and is left with a bitter, dank hop profile. Light sweetness remains in the background. Nicely balanced.” Overall: “Clean, easy drinking, APA with a nice berry character not frequently encountered in this style. Light and refreshing. Not lot of malt or hop flavor or complexity but would still complement any rich food.”

SweetWater Woodlands Chattahoochee Release #4

Aroma: “Moderate generic citrus with orange, tangerine, and lemon up front. Wet wood and a hint of vanilla behind that. Bready malt supports the fruity and woody aroma.” Flavor: “Ripe peach, grape skin. Sour character is really nice; it’s not overpowering and is very soft on the finish, leaving a lingering fruity, pepper quality. Tannins on the finish add a perception of bitterness and balance, though it’s a wee bit heavy on the overall impression.” Overall: “A restrained yet complex sour beer with a pleasant tartness throughout and hints of lemon, peach, and white pepper. The spicy character seems to come primarily from the barrel.”

Bruery Terreux Frucht Passion Fruit

__Aroma:__ “Passion fruit that smells perfectly ripe and comes across as moderately sweet with a tart punch. Some kiwi, pineapple, and sweet floral notes. Very tropical. Slight bready malt in the background.” __Flavor:__ “Passion fruit is the star. There's a bit of bready malt, but if it weren’t for this beer being very dry, I might think it was just passion fruit juice. A bit of sweetness, but intensely sour. Very clean lactic acidity. Hints of pineapple, orange, lemon, apricot. The carbonation makes the beer dance on your tongue and the sweetness balances the acidity nicely. Just a touch of some funk.” __Overall:__ “This beer is a passion-fruit showcase. It comes across as ripe fruit or fruit juice. For the level of acidity I find this beer to be very drinkable. Nice balance of sweet, tart passion fruit with a sour finish. The flavors all flow together. The passion fruit hold up great.”
