Ninkasi Brewing Co. Brightberry

What the brewers say

“The smell of ripe berries in the air, the salty mist... Sweet and tangy with a tart finish.”

What our panel thought

“Fairly clean, almost soapy aroma gives subtle hints of lime and lemon citrus; lingering raspberry gives way to soft bready malt. Flavor is surprisingly malty with hints of pilsner, wheat, lemongrass, and earthy hops. Light sourness and mild tartness. Assertive acidity on the finish leaves the fruit as an afterthought.”

What our editors thought

“A murky nose hides potentially bright notes in the soft haze of refermented fruit. The sip is obscured by water chemistry, leaving a hint of defined fruit in your first breath afterward.”

Good Word Brewing & Public House Gran Gran

“Hints of apple peel and blackberry vodka in the aroma. Pie comes through nicely in the flavor. Balance is more toward the sour and tart, but it still works.”

West Sixth Brewing Sixfold VI: Blackberries

Ripe blackberry nose with additional layers of oak and cherries atop an underlying barnyard Brett character. Well-balanced mouthfeel. Initial jammy berry flavor quickly overtaken by strong oak, which becomes dominant. A wood beer with fruit flavor.

Grand Teton Brewing Gose

**Aroma:** “Mild and beery, with light acidic and spice notes. Some floral esters show through, and the lemon, grapefruit, and peach open up with a hint of salt. Hints of tart and funk, and no hops aroma.” **Flavor:** “Surprisingly full body—a little too salty, but blends well with the mineral-water notes. The assertive hops flavor smacks into a pillow of soft sourness, accompanied by pineapple esters and a maltiness that adds a touch of sweetness. Lemon juice and a hint of lime zest play well with the hops notes of pineapple, grapefruit, and tangerine. The finish is dry, which accentuates the tartness a bit.” **Overall:** “Enjoyable and satisfyingly rich, interesting and complex. Flavors flow from one to the other without any of them being overpowering or standing out. It’s a substantial, malty take on the style that’s well executed.”
