What the brewers say

“A Belgian-style blonde ale brewed with peaches, cinnamon, and vanilla.”

What our panel thought

“Cinnamon dances around the aroma, revealing glimpses of earthy peach and a hint of apple pie. Spice takes center stage in the flavor, but it’s restrained. Spicy phenol and moderate stone-fruit esters meld well with the peach. Fermentation character provides much of the complexity.”

What our editors thought

“Stone fruit and pumpkin pie with pulses of pepper in the nose. The sip plays on the sweet and spicy theme, quickly presenting round peach notes, then snatching them back in a tight peppery fit.”

Perennial Artisan Ales Southside Blonde

Yeasty aroma with mild spice halo: tangerine, banana, cloves, white-bread malt. In the flavor, yeast-driven spice, fruit, and bubblegum are tempered by bitterness and spicy hops. Some bitterness lingers. Crisp and lively. Much emphasis on fermentation character, without much backing it.

5:00 O'Clock Afternoon Ale Renegade Brewing

Aroma: “Largely neutral. Sweet corn-like malt mingles with slight floral and sweet soapy hops aromas. All are very subtle and restrained.” Flavor: “Simultaneously sweet and bitter all the way through, notes of flowers and candied apples, herbal hops, and a mineral characteristic. Clean fermentation highlights dry malt and crisp hops bitterness. Finishes very dry.” Overall: “Light and neutral. With so much going on, it comes across as muddled rather than complex. Yet, the crisp hops bitterness has no trace of harsh edges.”

Broad Brook Brewing Company OLMEC Mayan Kakawa Stout

“Hints of anise, fresh ginger root, mint, cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon combine in the aroma to create a wildly complex nose. Those spices blend together in the flavor and emerge out of the roast, coffee, and chocolate malt body to create a mid-palate spice explosion that slowly fades into a pleasant pepper-like heat in the finish.”
