What the brewers say

“Boiled Bohemian malt, heavily hopped with Saaz. Cold fermented and stored. Traditionally brewed and idyllic.”

What our panel thought

“Golden pour, firm white head. Soft biscuit-and-cracker malt aroma complements earthy, floral, piney, lightly woody hop notes. Complex and inviting. Elegant bready malt flows across the palate; a rounded underlying bitterness makes itself known. Light sense of dankness to the hop flavor—resinous, earthy, floral—balancing well with toast-forward malt character. Well-balanced and enticing. Bright yet bitter finish is pleasant, creates a sense of crispness and dryness, begging you to take another sip.”

What our editors thought

“Gorgeous golden body. Light floral nose, but the sip is where the magic happens—substantial but soft bitterness is bold yet refined, unique, and confident. For a Czech-style pils, it’s turned to 11, but the bigness works in the context.”

pFriem Family Brewers Czech Dark Lager

“Light brown in color, bright; solid, lasting head. Toasted bread, chocolate, hints of coffee, caramel, and sulfur coupled with strong, floral, Noble-hop aroma. Rich yet restrained malt flavor: toast, crust, light chocolate. Bitterness almost perfectly balanced to keep the malt in check. Super-clean. Refreshing finish. Lightly sweet malt begs for another taste. Elegant, creamy carbonation brings all the flavors together in wonderful synergy. Herbal hop flavor might be a touch strong for style, but it plays so well.”

Brick West Brewing Company Brick West Czech Pilsener

Wonderful hop-driven nose, soft and herbal, with sweet malt notes. Moderate herbal bitterness, delicate, with an almost tea-like tannin. Bitter and crisp into a moderately dry finish. That bitterness builds, slightly resinous but not harsh. Nicely done. I'd neck it from the bottle.

Wayfinder Beer Hell

“Tempting aroma—lemon and toasty dough jump from the glass; light mineral aspect accentuates floral hops. Fresh grainy-sweet malt, Noble hops cut through to bring balance. Perfect carbonation. Elegant finish with a touch of citrus. Soft, balanced, drinkable.”
