Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout

What the brewers say

"Black barley and roasted malt provide distinct notes of rich chocolate and espresso."

What our panel thought

“Moderate cherry, red wine–grape aroma. Light chocolate, coffee. Medium pine, citrus hop flavor with light tropical notes. Leans into the acrid dark malt note to good effect. Significantly bitter throughout yet comes across balanced and austere.”

What our editors thought

“Comforting nose with subtle citrus and pine notes. The flavor is soft with a mellow initial chocolate approach and very light roast that allows the hop notes to push forward as it lingers.”

Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout

“Aroma of charcoal dust, dark toast, light coffee roast, with hop-forward pine and orange-blossom notes. High carbonation. Lots of deep, dark roasted malt in flavor, with pine, black pepper, bread crust, coffee. Hoppy, with clean bitterness that clears the palate. Rich and satisfying without being overly full or sweet, hop-forward yet maintains its stout character. Very well balanced, nice drinkability.”

Three Taverns Brewery Cocoa Cafe

“Cinnamon, vanilla, caramel, maple syrup, and hints of nuttiness in the aroma create the impression of decadent breakfast pastries. The coffee notes emerge more in the flavor and serve to temper the sweetness and balance things.”

Black Laboratory Brewing Willett BA Black is Beautiful

“Notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and vanilla play off blackberries and licorice. Flavor is a bit one-sided, with simple sweetness cut by boozy dryness. A slickness to the mouthfeel accentuates the sweetness. Refined—doesn’t punch you in the nose.”
