Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout

What the brewers say

“Rich black barley and roasted malt with distinct notes of chocolate and espresso.”

What our panel thought

“Aroma of charcoal dust, dark toast, light coffee roast, with hop-forward pine and orange-blossom notes. High carbonation. Lots of deep, dark roasted malt in flavor, with pine, black pepper, bread crust, coffee. Hoppy, with clean bitterness that clears the palate. Rich and satisfying without being overly full or sweet, hop-forward yet maintains its stout character. Very well balanced, nice drinkability.”

What our editors thought

“Forest and citrus with light cocoa powder in the nose. Light, almost bready body with a cool-toned hop streak that drops into roast and a finish driven by hop bitterness.”

Deschutes Brewery Obsidian Stout

“Moderate cherry, red wine–grape aroma. Light chocolate, coffee. Medium pine, citrus hop flavor with light tropical notes. Leans into the acrid dark malt note to good effect. Significantly bitter throughout yet comes across balanced and austere.”

Breakside Brewery & Taproom The Trappings and The Suits of Woe

“Rich, deep roast-forward aroma complements assertive oak and whiskey aromas. Deep chocolate, espresso with notes of fig, light raisin. Light espresso. Finish is boozy, but extremely smooth. Very rich, chewy, creamy all at once.”

Mikerphone Brewing Slappa Da Base

“Massive, but smooth and balanced. Aroma of sweet malt, whiskey, some umami. A rich spicy undertone with hints of cinnamon, dried fruit, licorice.”
