Cascade Brewing Kentucky Peach

What the brewers say

“Kentucky Peach is a blend of sour wheat and quad ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels for up to 16 months with fresh, Northwest-grown peaches. This limited project offers flavors of ripe peaches and warm bourbon with hints of oak and a light malt sweetness.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Interesting contrast of sweet stone fruit–like peach and plum and smoky dried fruits such as raisin, prune, and fig. Floral hops with a lot of bourbon-soaked wood. Slight caramel and vanilla oak. Smoke and ashy in a good way with a lot of alcohol evident.”

Flavor: “Quite acidic, sour, and tart. Peach, green apple, pear. Minimal funk. Wine-like dryness. Vanilla/caramel oak that is a bit astringent/woody. The wild flavors are fun and complex, and the dryness on the finish really enhances the fruit and builds on the peach aftertaste.

Overall: “An interestingly complex and unique mash-up of styles and flavors. Overtly sour and tart, but fruity enough to notice. The wine and bourbon characteristics serve to balance the complexity of the bases.”

Monday Night Brewing Mischief Managed

Aroma: “Strong raspberry character—fruity but not overly sweet, with a pleasant nutty undertone from the raspberry seeds. Light tartness, a bit of woodsy character as it warms up.” Flavor: “Following the initial pleasant sourness, pleasantly tart raspberries emerge. The raspberry accentuates the fermentation character. Light, refreshing.” Overall: “Raspberry sweet/tart/sour swizzle with a light aroma. Subtle notes of oak, melon, and pear emerge as it warms up. A little more carbonation would have made this a real treat and complemented the crystal-clear pink color, making this beer a rosé-lover’s dream come true.”

Atom Brewing Peach Sour

Aroma: “Stone fruit (peach, apricot, plum). Some noticeable funk (leather, vegetal/onion, bell pepper). Slight perfumy hops. Mild oak, more wood than vanilla.” Flavor: “Overripe juicy and sweet peach with a restrained tartness/sourness. Slight funk. Well-balanced wild characteristics. Neutral oak tannins that give a slightly astringent finish. Slightly solvent. Restrained sourness complements the fresh fruit.” Overall: “The sweetness and juiciness of the peaches balance well with the restrained but complex wild characteristics.”

Adelbert’s Brewery Blackberry Barrel of Love

__Aroma:__ “A lot of boldness on the nose—juicy berries jump out with a slight lactic and light *Brett* characteristic acidity. Light bourbon character with some roasted malt. Slight prune-like character really shines through as it warms.” __Flavor:__ “Big stone fruit and prune flavors dominate up front. Slight *Brett* funk balances the tartness. Bourbon is very subtle. Sweetness finishes in the back with some acidity. Slight huskiness on the finish that gives a good counter to the sourness and sweetness. The oak adds complexity with some bourbon notes adding to the taste. An alcohol warmth is present in the finish. Big mouthfilling carbonation. Light bits of minty (likely from a LaChouffe-style yeast).” __Overall:__ “Fun beer! It is a delightful sour quad with berry and light oak. The sourness paired with the prune and cherry notes is really enjoyable. The *Brett* notes improve this beer, but be forewarned going in. The bourbon provides some good balance.”
