Fifty West Brewing Maple Coffee Death Valley Shootout

What the brewers say

"Coupled with coffee and maple syrup."

What our panel thought

"Cohesive blend of coffee and maple syrup across the nose; light fruit and green-pepper notes. Big, round, soft body. Layers of fruit-forward coffee, chocolate, maple. Sweet, restrained finish with roast that hampers drinkability. Underlying stout seems light; barrel adds spice that a richer beer would balance."

What our editors thought

"One-note maple nose. The sip is heavy in the mid-range—caramel, light chocolate, a touch of hop bitterness. A touch thin and unsupported relative to its peers."

Hi-Wire Brewing - South Slope Specialty Brewery 10W-40 Bourbon Barrel-Aged

“Aroma of coconut, licorice, coffee, light caramel. Dark chocolate, coffee notes lead the sip followed by a pleasant lingering bitterness. Subsequent sips give the impression of a Dark Chocolate Almond Joy. Firm bitterness balances the sweetness.”

Civil Society 4th Anniversary Black Label

Mixed-bag nose—pretzels, chocolate, peanut flour, roasted malt. Thick, chewy body—creamy peanut butter in the fore, layered atop chocolate malt, caramel, marshmallow, and roasted malts. A cacophony.

Fifty West Brewing BBA Death Valley Shootout

Rum-raisin dark-fruit nose; figs with dark-chocolate edges. Doughy malt with fresh floral and stone-fruit flavors—roundly sweet and bitter—roast, hops, and booze dovetail nicely. Medium-full body, tasting heavy yet feeling light. Rich, warming finish—whiskey and wine checked by bitter espresso.
