Von Ebert Brewing Rauch Helles

What the brewers say

“We took our Helles recipe and mixed it up a little by adding malted barley that has been smoked with beech wood and cherry wood. Flavors of wood smoke and baked bread.”

What our panel thought

“Yellow and bright; effervescent. The nose takes me to Bamberg: classic beechwood smoke coupled with some fine pilsner malt. Well-balanced, floral hop bitterness; medium-low smoke, with smooth biscuit and pie crust. Base is like milder helles that works well with the smoke. Super clean. Likeable balance on this. Classic in every way.”

What our editors thought

“BBQ pit meets apple and cherry on the nose—intensely smoky with an initial sharp bite, yet the light body offers an endearing malt sweetness that softens the phenolic line.”

Natchez Brewing Co That Denver Trip

“Smoke aroma blends smoothly with the malt—the sweetness of Munich malt complements the smoked-meat character. Smoke stays at the forefront in the flavor with nice malt complexity to buoy it. A hint of floral hops emerges mid-palate before it’s engulfed in campfire-like smoke.”

Around The Horn Brewing Company Reverse Altitude

“Aroma is camp smoke and Texas barbecue, fresh, deep post oak, absolutely lovely. Flavor is slightly sweet, toasty smoke with a soft, bready malt flavor that takes center stage. A balancing bitterness keeps everything in check, and the smoke really adds wonderful depth. Absolutely fabulous beer.”

Prison City Brewery Riot in Maine

Hints of peach, pineapple, and passion fruit complement the distinct citrus- and pine-forward hops aromas. The soft mouthfeel and subtle malt sweetness are a nice canvas on which to express the tangerine, lemon, and pine hops flavors, with hints of onion, green pepper, and garlic. The alcohol is sneaky but present, with a faint note of boozy warmth.
