Dogfish Head Super Eight

What the brewers say

“Brewed with eight heroic ingredients: prickly pear, mango, boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, kiwi juices, toasted quinoa....”

What our panel thought

“Light earthy prickly pear, fruit punch. Hints of berry, wine grapes, watermelon, kiwi, savory spices. Good acid balance, not overly assertive. Fruit-stand flavors abound but are muddled. Some white pepper floats in and out. Balanced; finishes with a citrus note and light acidity.”

What our editors thought

“Sometimes, a laundry list of ingredients can cohere into a new thing that’s so compelling it puts any questions to rest. In this case, we’re left scratching our heads.”

Parish Brewing Co. Greetings From Holly Beach

“Murk and haze look more at home in the world of IPAs. Aroma is unique, with earthy, tropical notes competing for domination. Earthy coconut meat and milk flavors integrate well with tropical nectar-like sweetness, evoking a tropical cocktail.”

Two Roads Brewing Co. Tanker Truck Plum Gose

“Bright pink color and long-lasting head. Light, floral, perfumy nose, delicate plum. Refreshing tart, fruity flavor: bright plums, light cherry, lactic acid, and lemons. Plums most evident in finish, which carries a salty mineral bite. Tart and assertive finish with lingering tannins.”

The Rare Barrel In Other Words

__Aroma:__ “The blueberry is subtle but distinct, with dark fruits, berries, red wine, a little lemon and tartness. The effect is so deep and rich it’s almost like port. A straw-like musty, funky, earthiness is present, with a bit of spice.” __Flavor:__ “Rich, vinous dark fruits quickly give way to intense acidity, which isn’t overly harsh or overwhelming. The sour notes are funky and tart, cutting the sweetness. High carbonation takes the tartness just a little too high, but the overall effect is very dry and not overly harsh. The finish is light lactic, with low sweetness and a moderate tartness.” __Overall:__ “The fruit flavors are excellent, very rich, and full of raspberry, but don’t deliver quite as much on the blueberry. But the intensity of the acidity hurts the drinkability of the beer some. The earthy notes and sourness work well together. A very enjoyable beer with some interesting complexities.”
