What the brewers say

A spontaneous sour ale with foraged Ohio pawpaws. Barrel aged and bottle conditioned.

What our panel thought

Nice tropical and white-wine aroma. As it warms, hints of passion fruit, melon, peach, sauvignon blanc, and lychee emerge. The flavor is aggressively sour up front, but as that fades, tropical notes of mango, banana, and star fruit shine through. Despite the initial sour punch, the acidity is not too overbearing.

What our editors thought

The nose is all New Zealand sauvignon blanc—bright minerality, kiwi, yuzu, and a morning-after-a-rainstorm fresh feeling. On the sip, the lower carb pushes the wine parallel but allows the sweetness to offset the acidity. A touch of sweaty tropical funk helps the balance. On further sips, the acidity builds and borders on uncomfortable, but those first few sips are memorable.
