Fonta Flora Brewery At Whipoorwill Farm Carolina Custard

What the brewers say

“Our Appalachian wild ale fermented with pawpaw fruit.”

What our panel thought

“Pineapple, orange, lemon, green banana, ruby red grapefruit, a hint of pepper and jasmine tea. Fleshy, ripe stone fruits add complexity in the mouth. Tart. Grapefruit and pineapple juice with some peppery complexity. Lemony tart finish.”

What our editors thought

“White grape and a fresh floral-blossom note in the aroma, with a bit of lemon balm, lime zest, overripe papaya. Citrus tartness with an earthy mango twang in the flavor. Funky yet grounded.”

Fonta Flora Brewery At Whipoorwill Farm Unto the Earth

“Vinous quality on the nose with some lingering dark-fruit notes. A soft leathery funk. Round, plump body with a layer of acetic acid flowing through, wrapping around thin notes of raisin and plum. Quite Flanders-like.”

Fonta Flora Brewery Carolina Custard

Medium tropical fruit-banana aroma. Notes of lime, coconut, kiwi. Mild baked-biscuit notes as it warms. Sharp tartness in the flavor intensifies the fruit character. Hints of coconut and lime. Finish is puckering with a long-lasting sour twang. Fruit expression is definitely the star of the show. Tartness needs to be cranked down.

Fonta Flora Brewery At Whipoorwill Farm Lake James Rind

“The nose is enchantingly festive—spicy Tajin, fresh watermelon, and lime ready to party in your mouth. A bit of salt puckers the mouth before the watermelon rushes in as a real quencher, followed by some corn-chip aspects, a tiny bit of playful heat, and a finish that begs for more sips.”
