What the brewers say

English-style brown ale with aromas of roasted nuts and chocolate. Slight earthy hop finish to balance the toffee-like malt backbone.

What our panel thought

Aroma of piney-orange hops with some spicy notes; light caramel and toast. Fresh, woody hop flavor, with medium-low bitterness that lets malt flavors shine: pleasant bready sweetness, lightly toasted, lingering pleasantly. Smooth and malty.

What our editors thought

Slightly fruity berry-citrus nose backed by darker caramel and earthy hops. The sip is a touch thin, but the flavor is compelling: light caramel, citrus, and light roast layered into a concise package. Taut, focused.

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Milder Dan Brown

Enticing toasted malt aroma; caramel, floral hops, and esters of peach and grape. Flavor brings layers of caramel with cocoa, toast, and stone fruit. Medium-high bitterness almost overpowers the malt, verging into IPA territory. Finishes clean. Well balanced.

Liquid Mechanics Brewing Company Stuck in Reverse

“Aroma of white bread and toasted crusts evolves into brown-bread maltiness in the flavor. Stays a bit one-note. Perfect level of bitterness balances the malt, rounding out the overall impression. Light, highly quaffable, agreeably smooth. Barely toasted cool liquid.”

West Sixth Brewing Co Smithtown Brown

Sweet, fruity, musty, earthy aroma: lychee, berries, dates, plums, light toast, and caramel, with piney hops. Flavor starts with sweet, smooth toasted malt followed by pronounced, fresh, piney-resinous hops. Tropical notes linger. Very flavorful. Slightly too bitter.
