1623 Brewing Hefeweizen

What the brewers say

“This refreshing ale is pale in color, with a pillowy mouthfeel that finishes bright and dry. Our Hefeweizen is distinctively German, with prominent banana and clove flavors.”

What our panel thought

“Aroma has plenty of clove spice, followed by tobacco and cigarettes. Assertive ester flavors. The carbonation is a bit low and the finish rather sweet.”

What our editors thought

“A yeasty nose with light hits of lemon and orange. Body is light but supportive. Carbonation is lively and bright. The sum is a hefe that feels lighter than its apparent ABV, weightless but not as strong in character and flavor as others.”

Fly Llama Brewing Millie Grace

“Light bready and bread-dough aroma up front with a low banana ester and slight lime hint. Mild tartness morphs into a light lemon-lime note in the flavor. Banana flavors are nicely restrained by a touch of clove, while both elements balance a bready malt body. Creamy mouthfeel.”

Wektenburger Kloster Hefeweisbier

“This beer pours beautifully with a billowing white head and a hazy straw color. The aroma is light on fruity esters and clove, while showing woody and herbal hops aroma. Tart wheat flavor in the initial sip, with subtle hefe character. A sweet, filling beer.”

Lawson's Finest Liquids Above the Clouds

Aroma: “Assertive orange, grapefruit, and lemon hops. Slightly piney and earthy. Hints of lemongrass, green pepper, and green onion with a background of herbal tea and mint. There’s a touch of bready malt behind the hops.” Flavor: “There’s a lot of hops complexity. Bold citrus with a lemongrass focus. Malt flavors get lost in the shuffle. Light, clean body. Bitter and dry finish with a lingering hops-derived bitterness.” Overall: “More akin to a light-bodied session IPA/dry-hopped pale ale than a golden ale. Still, pleasantly assertive hops aromatics with a bold, hops-forward flavor in a super-light, clean ale. A unique dichotomy of styles.”
