Commonhouse Aleworks Wise One Hefeweizen

What the brewers say

“Our interpretation of the classic South German–style hefeweizen.”

What our panel thought

“Light bread and banana as hints of lemongrass mingle within the more traditional bubblegum and clove esters. Light citrus note carries through into the flavor, balancing malt sweetness. Pleasantly high carbonation cleans up the finish.”

What our editors thought

“Light pepper plays an equal role with bubblegum in the nose, as doughy malt slides underneath. In the sip, tight peppery notes can’t control the sprawl of the slightly under-attenuated body.”

Fly Llama Brewing Millie Grace

“Light bready and bread-dough aroma up front with a low banana ester and slight lime hint. Mild tartness morphs into a light lemon-lime note in the flavor. Banana flavors are nicely restrained by a touch of clove, while both elements balance a bready malt body. Creamy mouthfeel.”

DESTIHL Brewery Weissenheimer Hefeweizen

“Slightly grainy, fresh-baked bread nose, followed by restrained and balanced banana and clove. Subtle sweetness mingles with floral and pepper-like spicy bitterness in the flavor with a nice soft mouthfeel to support it. Finishes quite dry as the bitter side outbalances the sweet notes.”

C. B. & Potts Big Horn Hefeweizen

**Aroma:** “A big hit of wonderful esters—especially banana—and bubblegum. Some spicy phenols emerge as the beer warms, mostly clove, with a touch of citrus and pepper. Lemon tart and pastry follow, bringing forth Froot Loop aroma, and bready and herbal notes linger behind the yeast.” **Flavor:** “Such subdued flavor, which is surprising, given the hint of sour acetic in the aroma. Delicate clove and pepper phenols. Some great citrus notes of orange and lemon develop, and even more lemon in the aftertaste. The banana esters are on the lighter side, and balance with the sweet wheat and bread crust malts. Creamy and medium-light body, but a dry finish.” **Overall:** “The palate is soft, with a sweet body, and complex fruity and spiciness that carry the beer into a smooth, dry finish. While it’s not classic for a hefe, and it’s on the lighter side in body and ester profile for the style, it’s still a nice balance.”
