Greater Good Imperial Brew Co Bourbon Barrel Aged Evana

What the brewers say

“Aged in bourbon barrels. Creamy chocolate flavors with a smooth and subtle bourbon flavor reign supreme.”

What our panel thought

“Light chocolate, a woody/earthy note, a bit of coffee start off the aroma. The flavor leans roasty coffee with some chocolate notes. Not sweet. Medium-full body.”

What our editors thought

“Light roasty, smoky notes on the nose flow into an unsweet chocolate and caramel malt-forward sip. The barrel character gets a bit lost, and the body is much less decadent than contemporaries—a dry and sparing approach to barrel-aged stout.”

Greater Good Imperial Brew Co Good Night Moon

“Roast malt, hints of coffee, and a touch of perfume-like hops in the aroma give way to flavor that deftly balances the chocolate-malt sweetness with roast malt, earthy hops, and a touch of black licorice. Despite its heft, the alcohol is well masked. Drinkable and interesting despite its simplicity.”

Broad Brook Brewing Company Rooster Inhaler Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

“Hints of roasting coffee and crispy marshmallow on a delicate nose. Flavor is well rounded and compact. Dried blueberries, rich chocolate syrup, chicory. Malt, sweet spirits, alcohol nicely balanced. Tannins, vanilla add complexity.”

SweetWater Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel–Aged Imperial Stout

**Aroma:** “Mild bourbon, with vanilla, chocolate, light caramel, and malt roast. Dark fruit, raisins, light plum, and a touch of apple. Some light vinegar in there, too.” **Flavor:** “The sip starts with a rich flavor that’s a mix of roast, chocolate, vanilla, oak, and cherries. Dark fruits (raisin and prune), followed by the bourbon and mild smokiness. Medium alcoholic warmth, which carries through the finish. The body is thick and chewy and very smooth. It’s a nice blend of supporting players without any one stealing the show.” **Overall:** “This beer is very rich, with huge chocolate and bourbon, with strong roast and a moderate astringency that plays with the alcohol warming at the end of the sip. It has a big, thick body, and a single pint is probably as much as I could drink of this—it provided a nice platform to blend the flavors of the beer and the barrel. The flavors supported one another in a smooth and complex blend, and each sip gave more to consider, adding to the overall experience.”
