Seventh Son Brewing Murmuration

What the brewers say

"Showcase[s] beer aged in spirit barrels, including bourbon, rum, rye, and others."

What our panel thought

"Aroma more like barleywine—big barrel, vanilla, caramel malt, booze, a bit of chocolate. Umami hints. In flavor, sweet caramel fades through prune and coffee liqueur notes. Low bitterness. Warming alcohol and barrel-spice. Finish doesn’t cloy. Boozy, rich, complex without being a punch in the mouth."

What our editors thought

"Dark, roasty nose with anise and holiday spice. On the sip, holiday fruitcake—dark cherry and raisin braced by spice—and a warming, familiar, just-sweet-enough body. Endearing and rich."

Revolution Brewing Deth's Tar 2019

Vanilla and whiskey up front, chocolate malts supporting. More whiskey in the flavor—mellow roast, rich dark chocolate, umami richness, unifying beer and barrel. Moderate sweetness fades into a finish balanced by complementary alcohol. Warming but not harsh in the finish.

Second Self Beer Malibu Doyle

Nose of vanilla, burnt sugar, coffee, boozy rum, low coconut. Barrel melds with beer and coffee elements. Roast flavor, syrupy, with alcohol and woody notes. Coconut emerges mid-palate, lingering with toasted sweetness. Dry finish and slight body.

Side Project Derivation Blend #9

Aroma: “Loads of cinnamon and chocolate. Maple, vanilla, caramel, slight coffee, slight roasted malt. Subtle bourbony-booze aromas. Complex and inviting.” Flavor: “Spicy cinnamon. Semisweet chocolate. Slight peppery spice/heat. Sweet maple. Spicy coffee. Vanilla and caramel barrel characteristics. Fairly viscous and mouth coating. Nice warming character from the barrel without being overly hot.” Overall: “A boozy, warming, well- balanced combination of chocolate, cinnamon, and maple chased by a coffee finish. You can taste the integrity and deft handling of ingredients in this beer.”
