What the brewers say

"Strong notes of vanilla and caramel from fresh whiskey barrels complement a roasted malt bill ... a smooth and full-bodied stout."

What our panel thought

"Oak and chocolate aroma; rich, underlying malt and roast. Sweetness and bitterness moderate; fairly strong oak, chocolate, coffee. Crisp, dry, roast finish—a bit stark. Some oak astringency. Malt floor kind of drops away; doesn’t quite stand up to the oak."

What our editors thought

"Leathery-brown malt nose with toasted whiskey barrel; caramel and vanilla touches. The sip is cool, thin, dark chocolate–forward. Barrel recedes as creamy, bitter chocolate emerges. Light for its intentions."

Avery Brewing Company Out of Bounds

**Aroma:** “Toasty malt and chocolate. Bread crust. Big piney and slightly minty hops profile. Medium dark roast supports from beneath. Malt sweetness. Moderate roast note with a hoppy quality, a light chocolate. A light aroma even after it has warmed up.” **Flavor:** “Sweet toasty and chocolate malt fades into assertive bitterness and acidity from the dark malt. Well-blended roast and hops! The piney and minty hops notes along with the bitterness work very well with the chocolate and dark roast from the malt bill. The body is medium-dry throughout, which helps the hops shine instead of overwhelming them with sweetness. Some citrus notes. The finish is slightly dry.” **Overall:** “Very well balanced. Very drinkable and enjoyable. The roast was present, the hops came through, and both added some complexity to this beer. Light fruity note with a pear aftertaste, neat. Lingering bitterness is pleasant and makes you want to take another sip.”

Deschutes Brewery The Abyss

“In the nose, dark roast, sweet chocolate, and sun-dried tobacco leaves intermingle. Bitter dark-chocolate flavor, huge roast, with some sweetness in the background. Leans old school with the higher bittering, but with enough new-school smooth chocolate to balance.”

Avery Brewing Pomona

Nuts, oak, and Minute Maid fruit-punch nose—berry cobbler-esque. Tangy, juicy, with a fun nutty-vanilla running through that gives an impression of sweetness. Great balance of acidity and sweetness. Finish is clean and refreshing with a slight creaminess. Easy to go back for more sips.
