Perrin Brewing Company No Rules 2021

What the brewers say

"NO RULES were followed throughout the creation of this product. This 15% Imperial Porter was made with coconut and turbinado sugar then laid down and aged in bourbon barrels for several months. We hope you enjoy this product as much as we did making it!"

What our panel thought

“Aroma is earthy, rich, complex. Cinnamon, chocolate, malted milk, vanilla, dark fruit, banana; alcohol hidden in layers of pastry. Bourbon or maple Bananas Foster? Both.”

What our editors thought

“Curious floral spice nose with grape esters and oatmeal-cookie sweetness. Sip’s a bit thin, with huge coconut. Sweetness sags without malt support. All highs with no lows.”

Phase Three Brewing Blend: 2022

“Nose of chocolate, plums, and vanilla is supported by sweet bourbon-like notes. Flavor is rich caramel, dark fruit, vanilla, light woodiness.”

Twin Span Brewing The Davenporter

“Light nose, with hints of toasted breadcrusts and light caramel. The flavor is more rustic and earthy, with notes of black licorice; toffee dominates, heading almost into a smoky thing. Lager-like crispness is there, but it’s a bit thin. Finish is dry—just a hint of chocolate, with moderate roast notes. Sessionable at the expense of flavor.”

Perrin No Rules

Aroma: “Coconut up front with alcohol behind it. Like a chocolate wafer cookie mixed with passion fruit, berry, and spicy barrel.” Flavor: “Milk chocolate, coconut, coffee, and biscuit with toffee. There’s a noticeable vanilla character as well. Intensely sweet up front and still quite sweet in the finish, but the coconut lingers into the aftertaste nicely.” Overall: “Hershey’s chocolate syrup with toasty coconut, but very boozy and very, very sweet.”
