Against the Grain Bo & Luke

What the brewers say

Rich and smoky with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla, spice.

What our panel thought

Light whiskey aroma lingers. A blend of smoke and chocolate coat the tongue evenly. Some malt sweetness lingers in the background, providing a backbone to the smoked malt. Finishes on the sweeter side with pleas-ant dark-fruit notes.

What our editors thought

A tight and slightly smoky nose with brief glimpses of orange citrus segues into a bold body with rich but round wood notes and an enduring heft. Finishes with a lingering smoky note that’s angular but not harsh—a structured but not overbearing linger.

Avery Brewing Co. Barrel-Aged Tangerine Quad

__Aroma:__ “Tangerine citrus notes up front with some oak notes and a slight bourbon, caramel, vanilla sweetness. Bready crust from the malt with some slight stone-fruit characters. Bourbon comes through more as it warms.” __Flavor:__ “Big plum and raisin/date/fig really dominate up front. Bourbon and wood character provide some complexity in the middle with notes of tangerine. Malty sweetness lingers into the back, and the body coats the mouth. Mildly sweet for a BA quad. The flavors blend well, and it has a smooth tangerine citrus finish. Aftertaste: dark caramel, light vanilla, touch of citrus, light pith, big dried fruits, slight alcohol warming, light molasses.” __Overall:__ “It was fun to have the distinct tangerine taste with the malty notes of a quad and the barrel character. The tangerine brings a brightness to lift up the beer. This is a big, rich, complicated quad with a nice balance of flavors.”

Jackie O’s Brewery Coconut & Vanilla Rum Barrel Oil of Aphrodite

Boozy nose with aged dark-malt character, hints of dried cherries and soy sauce. A bit thin, but with rich dark fruit and chocolate. Dry roasted finish. Strong rum and vanilla notes add a nice spiciness to the swallow.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company Velvet Merlin

**Aroma:** “Some chocolate with a back of roastiness that is both sweet and earthy. Dried cherry esters are in the background. There is an oatmeal sweetness on the nose (sweet oats). Light touch of alcohol, but complementary.” **Flavor:** “Moderately sweet up front that fades into a moderate bitterness. Beautiful mouthfeel and medium-to-full body from the oats with a creaminess that coats the tongue and lingers into the finish. Medium sweetness with roasted and earthy complexities and some cherry notes. This beer has a nice smoothness that flows through the taste.” **Overall:** “The full satisfying body that isn’t sweet makes this very easy to drink. Toasted malt, chocolate, and dark fruit esters add a great complexity. The creaminess was nice, and the malt body showed the roast sweetness and roast bitterness. The aftertaste showed a sensitive balance of chocolate and coffee.
