Ratio Beerworks Genius Wizard 2019 Maple Pecan

What the brewers say

"Maple pecan variant of Ratio's bourbon barrel–aged Genius Wizard."

What our panel thought

"Well-integrated maple syrup and pecan aromas with lingering barrel. Rich, dark roast flavor with pecans, chocolate, coffee, subdued bourbon, and maple sweetness that doesn’t cloy. Full body, somewhat oily. Sweet finish."

What our editors thought

"Deep chocolate praline nose. More rich and rugged than soft and sweet. On the sip, subtle sweetness highlights substantive nuttiness and bold chocolate. Intensely flavorful and rich without relying on sweetness as a crutch."

Ratio Beerworks BA Genius Wizard

Cholate cake, caramel, light hazelnut spice in the nose. Booze bite could use some backup, but there is a pleasant bitter chocolate caramel, toasted coconut, cinnamon taste as it warms.

Orpheus Brewing Stouts All the Way Down: The Vanilla Chronicles: Mexican

Deep bourbon and chocolate aroma. Rich, thick body. Layers of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, roast, vanilla, spice. Sweet finish with chocolate, fruit notes, hint of soy sauce. Complementary alcoholic warmth. Sweet, but balanced within over-the-top richness.

Springdale Maple BA Brigadeiro

Aroma: “Rich coffee, roast notes with a syrup-like backing sweetness. Not decidedly maple but in that realm. Raisin and no major wood aroma. Possibly some vanilla. Very interesting and inviting.” Flavor: “Lots of good stouty dark malt character—coffee and chocolate. It’s fairly sweet, but the roasty finish dries it up a bit and keeps it from being overwhelming. The barrel character comes through nicely on the finish.” Overall: “A really good stout —lots of breakfast-like complexity with the coffee and syrup notes, but nothing is over the top or out of balance. The barrel qualities on the finish really smooth out the initial sweetness and tie things together well.”
