What the brewers say

“Our take on a traditional German black lager.”

What our panel thought

“Mild herbal-piney hop aroma; lightly smoky, roast coffee, toast. Assertive flavors, predominantly coffee and toast malt. Hops are big and out of character; good backing bitterness, though herbal-minty flavor is unusual. Finishes slightly sweet. A hint of burnt character lingers. Enjoyable, but the only thing schwarz is the color.”

What our editors thought

“Pillowy head is alluring. Aroma is bits of burnt toffee, cacao nib, cappuccino, mint. Those also express in the sip, with a chocolatey-bitter edge across layers of rich caramel. Finishes crisp with a touch of hops.”

Uhl’s Brewing Co Raspricot Shleemies

“Deep pink pour. Brilliant citrus-hop nose with a soft honey note. Full body, with citrus-tropical hop juice shining all the way with a raspberry touch. Intriguing blend of hops and fruit. Pleasant acidity.”

Jester King Brewery 2019 SPON Three Year

Peach, apricot, light vanilla, pineapple, light Brett horse blanket, touches of earth and dust. Medium acidity, light oak in aroma and flavor, sour-musty balance.

**Aroma:** “Smoky (cherry wood?). Nice dark coffee notes with hint of cocoa. Medium cherry esters. with a light undertone of ash. Mild hops aroma.” **Flavor:** “Light smoke notes complement full-bodied roastiness. Alcohol is smooth and warming. Good roast malt up front, with a bit of smoke. Mild chocolate. First sense is sweet, but some lingering hops bitterness, the roast edge, and alcohol dry out the finish. Fairly fruity. Aftertaste has a low hops note and smoke that continues after the sip.” **Overall:** “Bittersweet and chewy, this is a heavy hitter. The smoky notes provide additional body and fullness without coming across as a campfire or a rauchbier. The balance of the smoke in this beer in enjoyable. It is not over the top and it lets the chocolate notes come though. A light burnt note plays well with the smoke.”
