Devils Backbone Brewing Co. Schwartz Bier

What the brewers say

“It’s a traditional Old World beer style and it’s a lager, so it takes time to make, but it also has roasted and toasted malt flavors. And while it’s light to medium in body, it’s black with a quick, crisp finish.”

What our panel thought

“Deep brown and brilliant; good head retention. Intriguing aroma; chocolate malt embraces woody hops—floral, cocoa, coffee. Each sip, in turn, starts with the caramel/toffee malt, then fades down to a mix of lightly burnt roast malt and cocoa. Well-balanced with the hops, which build and linger. Clean, drinkable crispness. In the finish, touches of ash, warmth, and a mineral edge.”

What our editors thought

“S’mores on the nose with a bit of graham cracker, burnt marshmallow, and just a touch of campfire. Flavor is mellow, toasty, dark caramel with light hop bitterness—not as structured as some, not as loose as others, but right down the middle.”

Wolf's Ridge Brewing Sustinator

Clear copper color; good head with excellent retention. Nose offers a swirl of caramel, toasted nuts, browned biscuits, light cherry, and floral hop. Malt builds in the flavor—dates, chocolate, toast, caramel, tobacco, fig, currant, brown sugar, along with a spicy alcoholic warmth. Additional flavors emerge with each sip. Touch of sweetness lingers into the finish, with a light toffee topper. Smooth, fairly creamy. Excellent doppelbock.

Port City Brewing Schwarzbier

Nice caramel welcome, with a twist of mint from floral, spicy Noble hops; low coffee, cocoa. Subdued, balanced roast melds with hop bitterness. Finishes dry and quickly, begging for another taste.

Highland Brewing Black Mocha Stout

Hops aromatics of pine, light green peppery spice, and dankness mingle with a distinct roast malt profile. The roasted malt is pronounced in the flavor with hints of chocolate and a tannic-like huskiness that seems to dry the beer out a bit. That and some distinct pine-forward hops notes create a fairly bitter finish.
