Wolf's Ridge Brewing Moscatel Barrel Magellan

What the brewers say

"Imperial Maple Stout aged in imported Moscatel wine puncheons for 18 months. Flavors of maple and chocolate marry with French oak, mild citrus, toffee, and raisin from the cask."

What our panel thought

“Oak-forward aroma, with roast, toast, and vinous brightness. Light acidity in flavor brightens the overall impression. Lots of sweet chocolate and caramel malt, with moderate sweetness balanced by oak tannins and alcohol warmth. Strong grappa flavor bonded to the stouty bits. Every sip is surprising.”

What our editors thought

“Leathery red fruit in the nose with a bit of vanilla. The sip is sweet but vinous—wide on the tongue but not cloying, with a woody back note.”

Wolf's Ridge Brewing Chocolate Port Barrel Dire Wolf

“Bitter chocolate nose mixes with vanilla and red wine. Intoxicating flavors of smooth chocolate, vanilla, and dark roast, with a dark-fruit backbone. Thick, not quite chewy. Port barrel adds complexity throughout. Smooth and balanced, delicious and well executed.”

New Image Brewing Co Noema - Blend No. 6

“Port wine–like aromatics with hints of roast, chocolate, coffee, maple syrup. The sip is equally compelling with a distinct maple note emerging from layers of port, caramel, dark chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, vanilla.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (2021)

“Muscled-up olafactory pounding of bourbon, plum, vanilla, chocolate cake, smooth barrel char. Flavors of fudge, red dessert wine, and burnt caramel keep me coming back. Base stout debauched in complex layers that marry so well with the barrel. Big, thick, boozy—in a great way. Fantastic beer.”
