What the brewers say

“A badass wheat beer bursting with pineapple and coconut.”

What our panel thought

“The memories of a subtle aroma of pineapple and the slightest hint of coconut are quickly washed away by the assertive punch of a tropical tidal wave of piña colada in beer form when it hits your tongue. The beer could have gone horribly wrong, and yet is so right is so many ways.”

What our editors thought

“Kudos to the brewer for tackling such a flavor-forward beer that sacrifices so much beer history to the altar of audience-pleasing flavor. It’s a confident move that could have backfired. We hate ourselves for wanting more.”

Ska Brewing Company Modus Hoperandi

**Aroma:** “Danky hop aroma dominates. Citrus hops up front with pine coming through behind the grapefruit and finally giving way to a subtle malt sweetness. A very subtle, but pleasant malt note and additional tropical fruit flavors as it warms. Nice complexity.” **Flavor:** “Bright, almost sharp hop flavors with prominent citrus rind, resin, pine. Some subtle yeast fruitiness and pleasant malt sweetness that also has some subtle biscuit character. Bitterness is prominent, but well balanced with malt. Big hop flavor.” **Overall:** “A very tasty IPA with intense hop flavors that are well-served with a nice malt backbone. A nice display of juicy American hops, just a bit too bitter for some tastes. Classic example of an IPA.”

WeldWerks Fruity Bits Pina Colada

**Aroma:** “Big orange, vanilla, possibly chai, tobacco, mangos, pineapple, and coconut. A very light hops spiciness as it warms, but no bittering aroma. Piña Colada aromas are assaulting my brain.” **Flavor:** “Huge spiced and fruit notes of mango, pineapple, and maybe a touch of coconut. The bitterness is balanced and maybe slightly accentuated by, the spices. The fruity flavors are rounded out so wonderfully with a beautiful fluffy mouthfeel that is expertly executed. Finishes with a light alcohol harshness and a ton of coconut.” **Overall:** “A tropical New England IPA—this is what I would expect a Hawaiian New England IPA would taste like. Never has an IPA transported me to a tropical beach so quickly as this beer. So many positive emotions are evoked by just holding this beer near my nose, let alone drinking it. Cheers to the fine souls who brewed this beer.”

Eddyline Brewery Epic Day Double India Pale Ale

__Aroma:__ “Orange, pineapple, apricot, cherry, nectarine, and lemon zest with a touch of toasted honey malt to balance. An ever-so-light pine aroma is welcomed.” __Flavor:__ “Citrus and light stone fruit dominate the palate with just enough malt backbone to cut the intense hops character. The body is rich and inviting, but once you sip it, you are reminded that you’re above 10 percent. Medium dank hops flavor profile comes through mid-palate. Honey and caramel come through at the end.” __Overall:__ “A tasty beverage that will slap you around if you forget what you’re drinking. Hops aren’t quite as heavy hitting as some, but the beer itself is well put-together. Crisp finish, noticeable heat, plenty of hops. Would be popular at a party.”
