Kona Brewing Wailua Wheat

What the brewers say

“A golden, sun-colored ale with a bright, citrusy flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit.”

What our panel thought

“The passion fruit comes across somewhat earthy and raw in both aroma and flavor. Floral, earthy, and slightly dank hops seem to accentuate the raw fruity aspects. Somewhat simple in body and mouthfeel.”

What our editors thought

“Nose is balanced between beer character and fruit notes—a touch of sulfur adds a Pilsner- or Kölsch-style note with hints of fruit in the background. On the sip, the fruit is equally balanced and not overwhelming, and the touch of bitterness adds to the drinkability.”

Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat (2018)

“Bready aroma with a light fruity note and hints of an underlying candy-like sweetness. Slightly tart, reminiscent of green apples or cider—weird for the style but not unpleasant or off-putting. The dry finish ties the beer together with a lingering toasty note and minimal bitterness.”

4 Hands Passion Fruit Prussia

**Aroma:** “Lychee nuts, but then some hints of guava, peach, pineapple, and passionfruit. The nose is all about the funky fruit, without much fermentation character. Some acidity, with some musty background and no hops aroma.” **Flavor:** “Sweet with some tropical fruit flavors, and Tutti Frutti gum notes. A hint of lychee, but then a much stronger pulpy orange juice, cut with passionfruit. Sour complexity seems tied to the fruit. No discernable malt or hops bitterness. Finishes with just enough fruit and tartness lingering to entice the next sip.” **Overall:** “Fruit-forward, juicy, and mouthwatering. Nice exotic tropical fruit flavors, but maybe a touch over the top. Could be a bit dryer and more balanced, considering the sweetness is so heavy on the finish. Overall, a well-executed base beer that’s enhanced with complex tropical fruit notes.”

Odell Brewing Company Easy Street Wheat

**Aroma:** “A breath of graham cracker−like wheat, a touch of bread, and a clean, very low yeast character. Some light citrus esters, and a touch of herbal, grassy hops and raw wort, plus a sense of some bitterness to come.” **Flavor:** “The aroma suggested a more hops-forward flavor than comes through. A delicate balance of low bready malt character with a hint of graham cracker and a bit of earthy and herbal hops. Some fruit esters emerge as peach and nectarine, along with some unexpected almost Brett-like notes. Medium body with a touch of sweetness. The finish is a touch bitter and a little watery.” **Overall:** “Very refreshing and easy to drink—this beer is balanced and clean, with the malt and hops in harmony. Some nice hops on the nose, but not the expected bitterness in the flavor. A great lawnmower beer. The soft palate makes this a good pairing for food.”
