Black Project STARGATE²

What the brewers say

"For STARGATE² we take regular STARGATE and then add more fruit, for a total of more than 8 lbs/gallon. "

What our panel thought

"Peaches and licorice up front. A distracting bubblegum-like flavor leads to a feeling of biting into a ripe peach skin. Intense tartness overpowers the positive peach flavors, and a bit of Brett bite adds to the sharp corners. If you like very sour beers with intense peach flavor, you will love this beer."

What our editors thought

"Intense fruit juice sacrifices beer character for jamminess."

Prison City Brewing 4 Piece with Strata

Thick, velvety blanket of foam. In the aroma, pink Starburst with a vegetal note. Grassy flavor with lemon custard and honey malt; nicely balanced sweetness with light background bitterness. Slick, tongue-coating mouthfeel. A bit unwieldy, raw, but with high points.

Black Project OXCART (2018)

Subtle and restrained funkiness on the nose with notes of leather, oak, lemon, peach, and horse blanket. This is paired with a soft grainy malt body and slightly tart finish. Refreshing and crisp with delicate fermentation notes. Really well-done.

SweetWater Woodlands Chattahoochee Release #4

Aroma: “Moderate generic citrus with orange, tangerine, and lemon up front. Wet wood and a hint of vanilla behind that. Bready malt supports the fruity and woody aroma.” Flavor: “Ripe peach, grape skin. Sour character is really nice; it’s not overpowering and is very soft on the finish, leaving a lingering fruity, pepper quality. Tannins on the finish add a perception of bitterness and balance, though it’s a wee bit heavy on the overall impression.” Overall: “A restrained yet complex sour beer with a pleasant tartness throughout and hints of lemon, peach, and white pepper. The spicy character seems to come primarily from the barrel.”
