Narrow Gauge Brewing Peanut Butter & Stout

What the brewers say

"Imperial stout brewed with lactose, peanuts, and peanut butter."

What our panel thought

"Rich peanut butter and warm chocolate aroma; notes of dark fruit, mashed banana, sweet caramel. Hefty, viscous body. Peanuts, hazelnuts, and chocolate are aggressive in the flavor. Reminiscent of Cap’n Crunch cereal. Subtler notes of strawberry and dark fruit. Softly bitter stripe of dark chocolate keeps the mood semi-serious, but it leans quite sweet in the end, slightly cloying. A bit of reassuringly accurate alcoholic warmth."

What our editors thought

"In the nose, deep roasted peanuts stand in for typical coffee/licorice note, with a signature earthy richness to the roast. The sip is smooth peanut butter with substantial chocolate—expressive and evocative of dark chocolate peanut truffles. It thoughtfully avoids sweet milk chocolate and peanut-butter candy clichés. Lower key without the sharpness, light caramel and cereal grain, and a cohesive flavor that's imminently satisfying."

WeldWerks Peanut Butter Cup Achromatic

The peanut-flour aromas coupled with some sweet chocolate notes create the impression of a freshly opened Reece’s. It delivers on what the aroma promises as what follows is a boozy version of a Hershey bar dipped in the Jiffy jar. The sweetness is present but restrained, the alcohol is noticeable but not harsh, and the balance is on point.

Belching Beaver Brewery Peanut Butter Milk Stout

“Strong peanut nose smells more like peanut flour, with a slight extract quality. The milk stout beneath is rich and full, supporting the adjuncts without being syrupy. Acidity and bitterness bring a nice crispness but detract from the flavors the aroma seems to promise.”

Dutchess Ales GB Pale Ale

Earthy, herbal, grassy hop aroma with mild fruit and light toasty malt. In the flavor, nice balance between assertive hop bitterness, earthy-piney hop flavor, and toasty-bread malt. Super drinkable. Lasting bitterness. Could enjoy several. This hits the numbers.
