Taking your homebrew to go is easy if you bottle. But if you keg your beer and don’t own a counterpressure bottle filler, then you’re probably stuck filling a growler. Even after you nail the actual growler filling process, though, your job is only half done. You still have to get that growler and its contents safely to its destination. Fortunately, there are some great options for doing just that.

Fossil-Fueled Travel

If you’re getting into a car, then (1) please don’t drink and drive and (2) please don’t let your growler roll around unsecured. That’s just a disaster waiting to happen. The cheapest option is to just place your cargo in the passenger seat and strap it in as you would a person. It’s an adorable solution, but it doesn’t work as well with standard glass jugs as it does with growlers that have robust handles.

For improved security, check out the Growler on Board from KegWorks. This is basically a car seat for your beer, but—and here’s the brilliant bit—when your growlers have been freshly drained and rinsed, just flip them over and use the holes in the bottom for convenient draining and drying. The Growler on Board can accommodate three growlers at a time and while completely appropriate for your beer, it’s not NHTSA-approved for your children.

Human-Powered Transport

The Growler Caddy from Fyxation Bicycle Company is a full-grain leather harness that attaches to the top tube of your mountain bike, commuter, or cruiser and eliminates the need to ride one-handed. Just slip the growler into the caddy, secure the straps, and you’re off to the races. It’s only intended for standard glass jugs, but with a bit of futzing and warranty voiding, I have it on good authority that other models can work. (Pro tip: Give that growler an hour or two in the fridge to settle down after your bike ride. Bonus pro tip: Especially if your route crosses railroad tracks.)

For those who prefer to be on foot, the Locomo Growler Backpack from BrewRasa might be more your style. Featuring a dedicated growler cradle within the main compartment, the Locomo Growler Backpack is perfect for day hikes, beach walks, homebrew club meetings, and anything else accessible by walking. There’s enough space to throw in lunch and a light rain jacket, but you’re out of luck if you want a hydration bladder. That’s what the growler is for.

The Growler Caddy and the Locomo Growler Backpack, as well as other great gift ideas, are available through the Craft Beer & Brewing Gift Guide.

Considerations

Growlers come in all shapes and sizes, so be sure to check that the product you want can accommodate the growler you intend to use. Before taking a growler full of homebrew to a park, open space, or other public area, check local regulations concerning open containers and public consumption. And don’t forget to stay safe no matter how you get yourself and your homebrew from Point A to Point B.

Cheers!
