Recipe: Burial Lightgrinder American Porter

Burial cofounder Doug Reiser says this American porter—which scored a 98 with our blind-review panel earlier this year—is the product of a desire to scratch the local itch for dark, hoppy ales, “something that speaks to the Asheville pub crowd.”

“It’s a style that we internally adore,” Reiser says. “It’s exactly what we hope comes back into style, as it marries our fondness for the Cascadian dark ale craze of Seattle with the palate of the Asheville drinker.”

He continues: “The marriage of roasty, coffee-like malt and very herbal and stone-fruit focused hops gives us a reminder of fruity coffees and smoked cannabis. The ghosts of Cascadian dark ale wrap nicely into our very Appalachian-desired, hop-driven dark ale.”
