New Belgium Pilsener

What the brewers say

“New Belgium Brewing’s Bohemian Style Pilsener is brewed in the traditional Czech style for a deeply refreshing flavor with a hint of malty sweetness.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Pleasant delicate bready sweetness. Hops are quite faint but have subtle notes of spice and soap. A touch of sulfur.”

Flavor: “The flavor carries with a biscuit malt sweetness throughout the taste. The hops provide some nice subtlety, but the taste carries the sweetness through the finish. Nice medium body and carbonation. Smooth finish.”

Overall: “A well-designed and well-crafted, but delicate, version of the style. There’s enough sweet malt to stand up to the mildly bitter noble hops flavors. Clean and easy-drinking beer.”

New Belgium Brewing Blue Paddle

**Aroma:** Light graininess with a touch of corn. Very light, sweet malt character with subtle hops in the nose. Light sulfur and soft minerals. Clean lager with no fruitiness. **Flavor:** Light, clean malt. Noble hops provide slight floral and spice character. Mildly hopped but in style. Finishes crisp, clean, and dry with a touch of astringency in the aftertaste. **Overall:** Refreshing. Nice balance of hops and malt. An excellent pilsner, perfect for a hot day. Hops are well-represented without being overwhelming. A tasty, easy-drinking beer. Clean and well made.

New Belgium Brewing Snapshot

**Aroma:** “Floral and bright. Good sweet malt character with a light lactic, tangy, acidic lemon spritz. Strong Belgian yeast spice character.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweet wheat malt profile. A bit of lactic acidity in the front end. Some lemon notes. Very malty with some acidic fruit. High carbonation, finishes dry but with a lingering grainy sweetness.” **Overall:** “A very well-balanced, tasty, and approachable wheat beer. Enjoyable and refreshing. Lightly tart, just enough to make it interesting and accentuate the wheat. Sweetness is nicely balanced with the acidity and bitterness. Tastes like a wheat beer with the lemon built in!”

Summit Brewing Keller Pils

Aroma: “Moderate Pils malt sweetness with a touch of sulfur. Very subtle floral and herbal hops with a touch of noble spice, a touch of malt breadiness. More Pils malt on retronasal. Light sulfur as it warms. Overall, somewhat muted.” Flavor: “Clean Pils malt throughout. Falls slightly sweet on the palate, but the finish is crisp and carries enough bitterness to cut through. Floral and spicy hops notes play well with the malt and bring a nice complexity. Finishes fairly dry with a slight grain-husk tannic bitterness.” Overall: “Nice beer, although a touch sweet for some. Easy drinking. A more aggressively hopped Pilsner that isn’t shy about what it’s trying to do with highlighting the spicy and floral hops.”
