Ahnapee Brewery Hippie Hoppy Hobo

What the brewers say

“Features Talus, Centennial, and Citra hops.”

What our panel thought

“Heavy honeysuckle nose with a light graininess. Surprisingly clean and bright despite the big malt in the background. Heavy hop flavor with a decent burn and grassy, floral, and earthy notes. Almost drinks like an orange liqueur with some of that sticky sweet citrus and heat. Strong and aggressively bittered, with a complex fruity hop profile.”

What our editors thought

“It conveys its strength like a weightlifter at muscle beach, showy and aggressive, but it backs up its claims with smooth definition.”

2nd Shift Brewing Co Art of Neurosis

“The nose is dank and earthy, but fairly muted. Light floral, resin, and pineapple. Medium malt, high firm bitterness. The flavor pivots to a dark, resinous pine paired with a little toasty malt and resin, pepper, light diesel, and orange or grapefruit citrus. Bitterness builds in the aftertaste.”

Alma Mader Brewing Breezecatcher

“Big hop nose with juicy notes of grapefruit, pineapple, citrus, and a light dank, grassy note. Fresh-squeezed OJ with some crushed basil. Creamy, full on the palate—mouthfeel suggests sweetness that isn’t quite there. Big character, balanced by turning up all the dials.”

Ahnapee Brewery PB Hobo

Rich peanut-butter nose with subtle hints of chocolate, cracker, and roast malt that blend well together. The peanut character becomes a bit more subtle in the flavor with the chocolate, roast, and cracker-like malt flavors emerging a bit more than they did in the aroma. The medium body may be a bit light, but the beer still comes across as bold and rich. The finish is moderately dry, holding onto enough beer character to avoid any semblance of cloying sweetness. A well-crafted take on the classic mash-up of peanut butter and chocolate while still holding the line of beer.
