Chapman All Clear Kölsch

What the brewers say

"German Kolsch"

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Bright noble-hops notes, floral, spice, and honeysuckle. Slightly sweet pale malt aroma that joins pear, apple esters, and slight bubblegum.”

Flavor: “Well-crafted malt complexity with depth of Continental base-malt character. The light sweetness of the malt works perfectly with the fruity esters and floral hops. Quite delicate, but with a zing from tangerine and lemongrass notes. Finishes smooth and dry.”

Overall: “A well-designed and well-

executed beer that is a near-perfect example of the style. A classic German hops character balanced wonderfully with grainy Pilsner malt make this an extremely drinkable Kölsch. It captures all of the malt character one could expect in such a light package without any of the less desirable side effects that malt can cause. Great balance where the whole is greater than just a sum of its parts.”

Twin Barns Brewing Company Einer Noch

“A grainy nose with a hint of toast, a light ester, a kiss of floral hops. Whisper of honey on toast and a light bitterness in the flavor. A smooth, clean, dry finish that is gone in the blink of an eye.”

Prost Brewing Kölsch

Aroma: “Floral, spicy, citrus (lemon), and slightly tropical hops. There’s a light bready malt in there as well as a touch of grassy. Quite complex for a simple style.” Flavor: “Light sweetness into light bitterness and very light acidity. Light body and a dry finish. Clean and simple malt profile with a hint of corn. Clean floral, perfumy, and slightly citrus hops. Slight mineral characteristic. Super well-balanced with a very crisp and dry finish that is not overtly bitter.” Overall: “Perfect balance of clean simple malt and complex but delicate hops in a light easy-drinking vessel. Just the right hits of sweetness, bitterness, minerality, and esters.”

Brasserie St. James The Koln Concert

Aroma: “Grainy Pilsner malt, crisp noble hops, peppercorn and citrus plus a lager-like character make this a beer begging to be tasted.” Flavor: “Simple base malt backbone. Floral, soapy, and slightly citrus-hops flavors. Slightly peppery and spicy. Moderate carbonation enhances a crisp effervescence and pronounced bitterness with a slightly sweet finish. It hits most of the notes in safe and expected ways, but there’s just a hint of clash between the resinous woodier elements of the hops and the ester component.” Overall: “The crisp finish, lightly fruity ester character is in line with expectations for a Kölsch. Hops seem more English than Continental. Well- balanced and well-crafted. It finishes crisp in a palate-cleansing way that ensures another sip.”
