Squatters American Wheat Hefeweizen

What the brewers say

“Brewed with German yeast and Tettnanger hops and has delicate citrus flavors.”

What our panel thought

“This beer aims for the simple Bavarian weizen and does a good job of staying on target. A smooth marriage of clove and banana, and the wheat flavor adds a nice bready note. It’s a little drier and lighter bodied than some examples. Not an earth-mover, but a solid offering.”

What our editors thought

“Tangy carbonic bite pushes in front of a soft wheat character but quickly drops off into less body than one might expect from a hefe. A touch thin and a bit light on character and personality, as it foregoes yeast esters for a more accessible drinkability.”

“Excellent presentation—large, off-white, poofy head of tiny bubbles that linger. Moderately grainy bread dough kicks off the aroma, followed by subdued but balanced banana esters along with low clove and black-pepper notes. The appropriately cloudy appearance sets the stage for a soft and creamy mouthfeel that gently carries the rounded grainy sweetness. The flavor matches the aroma with a nice grainy, bready base that supports medium-low banana esters and medium black pepper and clove phenolics. Hints of light vanilla further add to a metered sweet impression that remains supremely drinkable. Overall, very nicely balanced with restraint on esters and phenolics—all of the components play very nicely together.”

“Aroma has the expected hefe notes with an unexpected element of tobacco. Fruity esters are assertive, with a tart citrus and wheat background. High carbonation keeps it refreshing, with a lingering sweetness.”

**Aroma:** “A big hit of wonderful esters—especially banana—and bubblegum. Some spicy phenols emerge as the beer warms, mostly clove, with a touch of citrus and pepper. Lemon tart and pastry follow, bringing forth Froot Loop aroma, and bready and herbal notes linger behind the yeast.” **Flavor:** “Such subdued flavor, which is surprising, given the hint of sour acetic in the aroma. Delicate clove and pepper phenols. Some great citrus notes of orange and lemon develop, and even more lemon in the aftertaste. The banana esters are on the lighter side, and balance with the sweet wheat and bread crust malts. Creamy and medium-light body, but a dry finish.” **Overall:** “The palate is soft, with a sweet body, and complex fruity and spiciness that carry the beer into a smooth, dry finish. While it’s not classic for a hefe, and it’s on the lighter side in body and ester profile for the style, it’s still a nice balance.”
