Rodenbach Alexander

What the brewers say

“This mixed-fermentation beer consists of two thirds beer that was matured in oak casks for 24 months and one third young beer, and has been subjected to maceration with sour cherries. This extraordinary beer has a unique, balanced palate, complex finish, and subtle fruit and wood. Its aftertaste is reminiscent of a Burgundy wine, and its freshness makes this beer the perfect aperitif or accompaniment to cheeses or dessert.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Big cherries—like someone just threw a cherry pie in your face, in a pleasant way! Deep stone-fruit aroma. Tartness with just a touch of sweetness.”

Flavor: “Cherry flavor is relatively restrained compared to the aroma. There’s a nice underlying melanoidin malt sweetness with hints of dried fruit, and this pairs nicely with the pie-cherry sweetness. The sourness balances well. Light hops bitterness somewhat balances the sweetness.”

Overall: “If you like cherries, this is a beer for you. It’s not a one-note wonder, though; there’s a nicely crafted beer underneath that balances well with the fruit and adds dark malt complexity.”

Brouwerij Rodenbach Grand Cru

**Aroma:** “Cherry, fig, and raspberry tart aromas dominate. Grape notes with a touch of sourness and low malt sweetness. As it warms, grape notes recede and sourness comes forward.” **Flavor:** “Flavors of cherry, blackberry, fig, and biscuity malt with a clean lactic sour. The light sourness is well balanced by the round, full-bodied malt character. Lingering sweetness and a dry finish. Some spicy phenolics. Moderate tartness up front that’s mildly fruity. High carbonation with a medium body. Linger is dry with fruity notes and is medium lasting. Acidity is moderately high and balanced by the residual malt character.” **Overall:** “Very crisp and refreshing. High fruitiness mixed with high carbonation and a touch of acetic sourness and touch of herbal. The fruity sweetness is complex and well-balanced with a slight acetic sourness. A classic example of the style. Very tasty and smooth. Not super complex, but very nice.”

Rodenbach Brewery Caractere Rouge

__Aroma:__ “Bright spritzy blend of the three fruits, almost smells like a juice cocktail. Raspberry and cranberry, and a little bit of cherry. Sweet and fruity with some sherry notes.” __Flavor:__ “Each berry carries a different part of the flavor. The tartness from the cranberry balances well with the delicate sweetness of the raspberry and the richness of the cherry. The base beer is a bit of a mystery, but is likely a sour brown of sorts. A supporting roasty malt profile that definitely supports the fruit flavors. Good balance and complexity. Very drinkable with a great finish.” __Overall:__ “A good complex beer that has both the fruit and malt characters that support each other, but it would be good to taste more of the base beer to help balance out the intense fruitiness. This would only add more complexity. Nice beer!”

Brasserie de Blaugies Saison D’Epeautre

**Aroma:** “Light lemongrass note with low peppery esters. Medium white-grape note with a mild sweetness and slight apple and _Brett_ notes. Big lemon and earthy funk. Wet hay.” **Flavor:** “Fruity grape notes with a light lemon note and a high carbonic bite toward the end of the sip. Light body. Farmhouse characteristics with an apricot tartness. There’s a bit of sweetness up front that plays well with the citrus and quickly transforms into moderate acidity and low bitterness. Very dry finish and moderate-high carbonation.” **Overall:** “The subtle herbal and earthy notes provide balance and give this beer a refreshing and inviting flavor and aroma while complementing the blend of citrus and funk notes. Tart dry finish with moderate-high carbonation makes this very refreshing, and the mild acidity/tartness balances the expectation of sweetness.”
