Coronado Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Old Scallywag

What the brewers say

“Taste the smooth candy notes of caramel and toffee that have been oaked to perfection with just a hint of fresh pine.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Fruity, alcohol aroma with notes of red fruits and wine barrels. Brown sugar and sherry follow along with a hint of vanilla-honey barrel character. Woody/spicy/earthy hops.”

Flavor: “Malt-forward with caramel and orange blossom honey, that is quickly complemented by a wine-like ester flavor. A fruity alcohol presence comes across tree-fruit-like. Prickly hops bitterness lightens the sweet malt body. Interesting blend of earthy and spicy (almost peppery) barrel tones.”

Overall: “A very enjoyable beer that brings barleywine character, without the sometimes overwhelming gooey, bourbon-barrel characteristics. Fun take on American barleywine. Well blended and balanced for high ABV. Alcohol heat reminds you not to drink this delicious beer too fast! The wood character is assertive but enjoyable. Very nice example.”

Mission Brewery Totally Kölsch!

“Mellow Noble hop aroma with a touch of grain, wisp of sulfur. Mandarin orange in the flavor. Moderate bitterness, some earthy hops, and a lingering slight sweetness that helps balance. A touch of sulfur and light citrus in the finish.”

Old Nation Brewing Company Mi, Mi, Mi

“In the sip, warm mango, dulled peach, background pine, hints of caramel, and a woody, spicy, earthy character. The sip brings tangerine, lemongrass, and black tea with a healthy dose of booze that lingers into the finish. Bold and brash.”

Coronado Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout

**Aroma:** “Strong bold aroma. Some toffee and caramel. Strong malt sweetness, sweet cocoa powder, and almond with lots of vanilla to fill the gaps. Strong butterscotch or Butterfinger.” **Flavor:** “The flavor starts with a dry chocolate sweetness and carries through with some bitterness that leaves a slight astringent finish. Lots of roast character in the flavor. Rich sweet milk chocolate and almond throughout with vanilla supporting. The butterscotch continues into the flavor, but with an increase in complexity, from intense chocolate and roast. The warmth hits in the finish. And the beer finishes with some chewiness left on the tongue.” **Overall:** “Some nice chocolate and malt sweetness. This beer is pretty heavy through the finish. Not bad, just a little odd. Butterscotch or Butterfinger on the nose and more in the flavor. This beer is like drinking a liquified butterscotch chocolate malt ball.”
