Coronado Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout

What the brewers say

“A roasty, chocolaty barrel-aged liquid treasure that leaves you dreaming of vanilla bourbon notes.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong bold aroma. Some toffee and caramel. Strong malt sweetness, sweet cocoa powder, and almond with lots of vanilla to fill the gaps. Strong butterscotch or Butterfinger.”

Flavor: “The flavor starts with a dry chocolate sweetness and carries through with some bitterness that leaves a slight astringent finish. Lots of roast character in the flavor. Rich sweet milk chocolate and almond throughout with vanilla supporting. The butterscotch continues into the flavor, but with an increase in complexity, from intense chocolate and roast. The warmth hits in the finish. And the beer finishes with some chewiness left on the tongue.”

Overall: “Some nice chocolate and malt sweetness. This beer is pretty heavy through the finish. Not bad, just a little odd. Butterscotch or Butterfinger on the nose and more in the flavor. This beer is like drinking a liquified butterscotch chocolate malt ball.”

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Frost Monster

**Aroma:** “Subdued nose, but there are notes of dark roast coffee, chocolate, and very subtle dark stone fruit esters when you hunt for them. Strong bold roasty notes.” **Flavor:** “Roasty with hints of dry chocolate, sweet chocolate, and cherry. Vanilla. Some oak and bourbon notes are present. Nice warmth in the end. Some dark toffee and even black licorice notes. Some prominent fruitiness and tannin character emerges as it warms. The barrel character isn’t overly pronounced.” **Overall:** “The malt and dark fruit sweetness are really nice in the beer with some nice vanilla notes. A bold beer, that veers a little off course for the style, but still provides some unique flavors that are worth exploring.”

Pontoon Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Brownie Batter Member Brownie #2

“Rich peanut butter and brownie batter rule the aroma and flavor with hints of cashew, caramel. Vanilla adds richness. Barrel character is muted with just a hint of oak.”

Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery Bourbon Barrel Oil of Aphrodite

**Aroma:** “Chocolate, umami, light fenugreek and maple syrup. Moderate alcohol up front with slight fruity plum note reminiscent of Belgium esters. Roast malt, caramel, and vanilla. Some alcohol. Almost like vanilla coke with a light shot of Kahlua.” **Flavor:** “Coffee roast character is soft and sweet and buoyed by a fair amount of caramel and chocolate and some nice nutty elements. Moderate vanilla and light leather. Coffee with a touch of rum and a shot of vanilla cream soda.” **Overall:** “Big chocolate/mocha stout with bourbon. Touches of coffee and dark chocolate, but mostly sweet chocolate and bourbon. Fair bit of pleasant ethanol warming throughout. A good, enjoyable, easy-drinking stout.”
