Odell Brewing Company Double Pilsner

“Smoky phenolics dominate the nose, coming through as woody, complementing a light spicy phenol. Nice complexity without a hint of campfire. Images of ham hocks come to mind. Once in the mouth, the firm tartness, well-handled salt, smoke, and fruity esters (lemon and tangerine) meld into an interesting flavor that is a nice departure from the crowd. Very light and easy-drinking, but interest is piqued due to the depth of flavors.”

Aroma: “Pleasant spicy noble hops aroma. Pilsner malt and light toast mingle. Not entirely German, but in that ballpark (or Fußballplatz).” Flavor: “Light spicy hops flavor with a touch of wood and bready malt. There’s a light bitterness, but a touch more would increase the crispness. Nice dry finish.” Overall: “Nice malt flavors. Clean, dry finish. Great balance of hops bitterness. Extremely drinkable. Light and refreshing but still full of flavor. It’s a winner.”

**Aroma:** “Corn sweetness. Spicy hops aroma with slight sulfur. Some paper-like oxidation and mineral notes (could the bottle be older?). Woody like a Bavarian forest.” **Flavor:** “Sweet corn and bready sweetness. Slight lemony hops character with mild bitterness but little hops flavor. Finishes clean, but oxidation detracts from an otherwise pleasant flavor.” **Overall:** “Jeez, that is crystal clear! A refreshing Pilsner, but corn flavor holds it back, and the oxidation mutes the character. More like a light American lager than a Pils. Lemony hops accent. Clearly an American hand in the hops additions. Tasters were divided.”
