What the brewers say

“We added coffee, maple syrup, and vanilla to our barrel-aged big stout.”

What our panel thought

“Wake up!’ shouts the aroma. ‘We have coffee and maple pancakes!’ (And some chocolate syrup.) The sweet flavor echoes the aroma: coffee, maple, and chocolate. An assertive bitterness (barely) keeps the sweetness from being cloying.”

What our editors thought

“Evocative nose with nutty coffee tones and a wide range from deep roast and chocolate through maple and vanilla highs. Vibrant chocolate and coffee build a base in the sip with a round but punctual bitterness that contrasts with the more indulgent elements.”

Forgotten Road Ales M 3rd 25th: Fires of Nightmares

“Adjuncts play off the barrel character, adding a spiciness throughout. Substantial base stout adds sweetness and body to balance, leaving an impression of cinnamon-spiced hot chocolate. Barrel aging adds depth without harshness.”

Forgotten Road Ales GSO Barrel Select Stout 2024

“A powerful bourbon aroma of caramel and vanilla with black licorice and coffee. Big, sweet body with sambuca, bourbon, vanilla, crème brûlée, milk chocolate, plum, and dark cherry. Finishes with the perfect balance of sweetness and alcohol character. Easy to drink, despite the evident high alcohol.”

Great Notion Double Stack

Aroma: “As subtle as they may be, there are some blueberry, strawberry, and earthy notes from the coffee beneath the thick layer of maple that dominates everything else on the aroma.” Flavor: “Very strong maple-syrup character, though maybe not as intense as in the aroma. Milk chocolate sweetness throughout, with a lingering creamy finish. The roast from the stout tries oh so hard to peek through and brighten things up, but it doesn’t really have a chance. The coffee adds some dryness on the finish, but it’s still quite sweet overall.” Overall: “I need a pancake and a shot of insulin. Massive maple syrup. Over the top. Has some other nice flavors, but they get lost. Really sweet.”
