Full Sail Brewing Co Amber Ale

What the brewers say

Malty sweet, reddish-amber hue, medium-bodied with a spicy, floral hop finish.

What our panel thought

Aroma of caramel and biscuit with stone-fruit esters; hop bouquet of sweet citrus, pine, and tropical fruit; savory note. Caramel and biscuit sweetness hit early, balanced by a citrus-resin hop punch, followed by lightly bitter, mouth-coating finish. One-dimensional malt. Counter-punching sweet and bitter aspects work well.

What our editors thought

Vaguely orange and woodsy nose with a campfire-like note. The sip is thin but sweet, with a sharp caramel-citrus note that lingers. Only mild bitterness. Accessibility at the expense of interest.

Perrin Brewing Company Anniversary Amber Ale

Pleasant nose, as light caramel and biscuit blend with light citrus-dank hops and soft perfume esters. Piney hops step forward in flavor, balanced by backdrop of biscuit, caramel, and bread-crust malt. Drier finish, smooth aftertaste. Hits the marks but lacks that wow factor.

Portland Brewing MacTarnahan's

Effusively fruity aroma, with piney, sweet-orange hops and caramel-tinged malt. Orange-grapefruit hop flavors take over, lacking malt depth to stand up to the bitterness. Flavors aren't bad but don't meld. Thin body falls short. Dry, astringent finish.

Full Sail Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Peach-like esters with very mild hops, along with some indeterminate malt. I think this could work better as a mild saison (except for the DMS). Some malt sweetness heightens the soapy, floral character.” **Flavor:** “Earthy, woody hops flavor followed by a strong bitter finish. Slightly warming alcohol. I’m still getting the peach ester and intense floral flavors, like tulip or geranium. Bitterness balanced with a biscuit malt backbone. Both flavors blend together well.” **Overall:** “The color and hops are in line with style, but the rest is a bit distracting. A unique and assertive interpretation to the style that is a bit heavy-handed with the use and choice of hops. An interesting beer to drink, but not something I’d seek out if looking for a refreshing Pilsner on a hot day.”
