Garage Brewing Company 951 Blonde Ale

What the brewers say

A golden-hued, well-balanced beer that is crisp and most refreshing.

What our panel thought

Earthy hop aroma with hints of onion, pine, and bread-like malt. The flavor has a mineral edge that brings out some grainy malt, but oxidation mutes the impact. A hint of corn-like sweetness serves to temper the bitterness. Balanced, crisp. There's little to grasp. Not much of a lasting impression.

What our editors thought

A slightly sweaty tropical nose is backed by a touch of honey. On the sip, a slightly murky earthy hit leads, but the finish is lackluster.

5:00 O'Clock Afternoon Ale Renegade Brewing

Aroma: “Largely neutral. Sweet corn-like malt mingles with slight floral and sweet soapy hops aromas. All are very subtle and restrained.” Flavor: “Simultaneously sweet and bitter all the way through, notes of flowers and candied apples, herbal hops, and a mineral characteristic. Clean fermentation highlights dry malt and crisp hops bitterness. Finishes very dry.” Overall: “Light and neutral. With so much going on, it comes across as muddled rather than complex. Yet, the crisp hops bitterness has no trace of harsh edges.”

New Planet Blonde Ale

**Aroma:** “Buttery, sweet and candy-like. Little-to-no hops aroma. Green-apple notes up front, with a touch of must and some spice notes, perhaps from hops. Cider-like aroma full of green-apple skin and cane sugar.” **Flavor:** “Butter, sweet candy character. Tart, green-apple and very cider-like. Finishes semidry. Notes of candi sugar and honey but could use more hops flavor. Green-apple notes with a strong carbonic bite. Soapy and some chloro- phenolic properties that give a bit of astringency in the finish with apple-skin tannins and a hint of pear juice.” **Overall:** “Lots of green-apple character, and the carbonation is a bit too high, giving it a bit of carbonic bite. The finish is a little less dry than others. There is a harshness common to these, and the sweet finish seems to help battle it. Comes across like a cider with very funky medicinal notes.”

Garage Brewing Marshmallow Milk Stout

Big marshmallow nose with chocolate, vanilla, cream, and root-beer notes. Soft, round, creamy body with chocolate, cookies ‘n’ cream, and more marshmallow. Thinning toward the back of the palate; sweet, mouth-coating finish. Quite drinkable given the sweetness.
