Guinness Guinness Draught

What the brewers say

"Swirling clouds tumble as the storm begins to calm, settle, breathe in the moment, then break through the smooth, light head to the bittersweet reward. Unmistakably Guinness from the first velvet sip to the last, lingering drop and every satisfying mouthful in between. Pure beauty. Pure Guinness."

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet dark fruit character. Cherry, raisin, and roasty malt character with slight cocoa, chocolate, and coffee flavor. A little sourness and subtle vanilla bean notes.”

Flavor: “Light bodied with some slight creaminess and sweetness giving way to fairly aggressive bittering hops. Roasty, sharp astringent character. Some estery fruit characteristics. Creaminess carries through in the finish. Finishes dry with slightly oxidized notes.”

Overall: “The nose promised more than the beer provided. Somewhat light bodied with a roast character that dominates and a bit of creaminess to balance. Tannic harshness is too high—could use a bit less bittering or a touch more body to mellow it out. But the more you drink it, the more you enjoy it.”

Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout Nitro

**Aroma:** “Strong roasted malt character with sweet creamy lactose coming through. Some chocolate and coffee notes provide a bit of malt complexity. Very pleasant chocolate milk up front, some black licorice, some mild earthiness and pepper. Very sweet on the nose in a classically lactose way.” **Flavor:** “Wonderful round chocolaty sweetness. If it were the right color I would swear I was drinking chocolate milk with a touch of coffee. Chocolate flavors are complex, from semisweet to cacao nib. Nice mild roast with a touch of bitterness to balance the sweetness. Very subtle dark fruit ester notes. Finish is balanced with a lingering roastiness.” **Overall:** “An amazing beer. A very tasty milk stout with a bit more pronounced roastiness for the style, but very well executed. Very sweet from start to finish with hints of chocolate and lactose.”

Plzeňský Prazdroj Pilsner Urquell

**Aroma:** “Light, bready Pils aroma, slight sulfur, and floral hops aroma. This sample tastes skunky. Aroma improves as it breathes, and malt improves as it warms.” **Flavor:** “Faint, grainy Pils malt character. Malt sweetness balanced by a surprisingly bitter bite. Very light noble hops character. Finished clean with no fruity esters. Odd acidity in the finish. Not much hops flavor to usher in the bitterness. Skunky and slightly oxidized.” **Overall:** “Enjoyable and flavorful Pils with emphasis on bitterness. Crisp, clean finish with a good balance of bitter hops to pale malt. Refreshing. Suffers from issues related to transportation and storage.”

Smuttynose Brewing Company Smuttynose Imperial Stout

**Aroma:** “Big dark chocolate and coffee aroma. Big plum, dates, moderate cherry, light acidity, moderate caramel, light umami, light earthy hops, some brown sugar notes. A backbone of bready malt. I’m sitting by the fire with a snifter of...not barleywine, but this beer. Rich malt complexity with sherry, dried figs, and raisins, and warming alcohol. More caramel than roast, but the coffee and chocolate are there.” **Flavor:** “Lovely complex malt sweetness—like chocolate-covered Fig Newtons, or maple syrup, with a touch of earthy hops to help balance. Like a shot of strong expresso, no cream. Complex and deep, but a bit intense so sessionable is not part of this section. Big cherry, light plum, big chocolate, moderate coffee, light hops bitterness, touch of alcohol, moderate caramel. Aftertaste: big chocolate, touch of coffee, light bitterness. Starts out like a thinner-bodied barleywine, but the hops and roast bitterness crack that illusion. The promise from the nose is here, but it doesn't quite mesh as well in the flavor because the lingering hops and slight astringency add some harshness. Hops flavor is as big as the roast. Sherry, malt, dried fruit and esters are still nice, though.” **Overall:** “Very tasty, but could use a bit more carbonation to help the flavors pop. Love the fruitiness. Fun dark-fruit dominated imperial stout. The chocolate, caramel, and roast notes are present throughout with just enough hops to balance. It is fairly well carbonated, but that works to bring out the brighter fruit notes. The nose had me, but the flavor not so much.”
