Smuttynose Brewing Company Hayseed
What the brewers say
“Hayseed is a delicious sessionable farmhouse ale, also known as a grisette. Light-bodied, yet flavorful, Hayseed is like liquid sunshine: perfect after a hike, floating in the lake, or while playing fetch with your old brown dog.”
What our panel thought
Aroma: “Strong hint of the Belgian yeast characters with clove and banana, and medium-low passion fruit and peach esters. A light bready, apple, and citrus aroma, with woody phenols of cedar and pine that carry throughout.
Flavor: “Bready and malty, with a grainy flavor. Peppery, woody, piney flavor that lingers. A light peach, cherry, and tangerine sweetness that finishes tart, light, and dry. Moderate carbonation, and light-bodied.”
Overall: “Malt comes through effectively with a lot of fruity esters and spicy phenols. Quite bready, with peach notes that provide a good balance to the earthy flavors and aroma. The citrus notes were enjoyable, and this beer had some good complexity.”
