Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa B&B

What the brewers say

“This barrel-aged stout is a remarkable expression of barrel, beer, and coffee.”

What our panel thought

“Oak barrel and bourbon sing in the aroma with an undernote of smooth coffee roast, chocolate, caramel. The flavor features smooth aged bourbon. While the bourbon is the star of the show, the underlying beer has flavorful cocoa and coffee notes, subtle vanilla notes, and a boozy warmth.”

What our editors thought

“Bold coffee and liqueur in the aroma, boozy and enigmatic with flashes of dark fruit. Roasted coffee layers over roasted malt for a double hit of dark in the sip.”

Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa Cocoanut

“Aromatics come across fudgy and decadent, complemented by hints of vanilla, coconut, and boozy heat. The sip is just as rich with a syrupy and thick chocolate character that is complemented by a coconut and vanilla note and a hint of coffee-like bitterness. Over-the-top decadent, chewy, and luscious without being completely cloying. The adjuncts add layers that you want to sit and dissect in front of a fireplace. The heat is slow to arrive but emerges in the finish, providing a pleasant spicy counterpoint to all the rich sweetness.”

Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa Vanilla Rye

“Pleasant aroma, with boozy espresso, dark chocolate, and vanilla setting the stage for a spicy black-pepper note and hint of whiskey. The sip is smooth, with a spicy whiskey component, as rounded chocolate, coffee, and vanilla interplay jovially in the background. The rye brings interesting complexity while helping to balance the sweetness of this massive beer. Finishes with smooth and clean spicy black pepper and alcohol notes. Well-balanced with no rough edges.”

Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa Hazelnut

“Intoxicating Mounds bar nose. Robust chocolate flavor, with nuts, creamy coffee, maple syrup, and soft-serve chocolate ice cream. Big, thick mouthfeel and a nice dollop of booze. Sizable bittering helps balance hefty sweetness.”
